Unit 10 film production evaluation

Cinematography
As my short film was in the sports genre, I used a lot of close up shots at the the start of the short film. I done this is to build tension and show the emotion of each character. The close-up shot is commonly used in the sports genre. In the scene were the lead says "I want this, I really want this" it was vital to show the emotion of the character as that determines whether he means it or not. During the montage I use a lot of medium shots so the audience can see the equipment and surroundings to the fighter as the gym and location is vital to the sports genre. The medium to long shot also ensured the viewer, knew where the fighter was and could see the relevant surroundings.

Props & Costume
As my film was based around a boxer, I needed a lot of props. Luckily the college gym had a lot of the props I needed for my short film. The treadmill and weight bench was vital as it was the part of the montage that showed the intensity of the training and built up tension and anticipation for the fight, whereas the  punching bag used is a stylistic code of sports and in particular the fighting films. This instantly lets the audience know what type of film it will be, and in this case lets them know that the fighter is perfecting his craft in aims of winning and again builds up the anticipation for the 'fight' at the end of the movie. For costume the lead had sportswear on to signify that he was training, although if I could've had the right cast and time the  lead would've been topless to show the audience muscle, which shows in the sports genre how hard a character has trained. I also really would've like to have gotten hand wraps or/and boxing gloves and both are iconic in the sports genre, although limited time/resources meant this wasn't possible.

Location
The locations for a lot of my short film was simple as most of it was shot in the college gym, this was extremely suitable for my short film as it was about a boxer and a gym is where a boxer will do certain bits of training, and i believe will look perfectly natural to a watching audience. Also shooting the running scene on the college field makes follows codes and conventions of the sports genre as this happens in almost all sports films. At the start of my short film I feel like my dialogue scenes could've been filmed in a better place, although I feel I still got the effect I desired from those scenes.

Actors
The acting wasn't the best as the actors in hindsight didn't suit their characters as perfectly as I would've liked. Also, filming was tough as it took quite a few takes to perfect a scene which meant I had less time overall.

Sound
In the training montage I use the non-diegetic background music. The song I use is “Hearts on fire” by John Cafferty. This is pleonastic sound as it adds resonance to the action for the audience.  This type of pleonastic sound is a hallmark for the sports genre, as many movies like this one use the sound to intensify certain scenes for the viewer and also aims to make the viewer feel more involved. It is used in many sports films

Codes & Conventions
My short film contains a utopian view of the world, which means that anyone that works hard and works by the rules will succeed, you see the in a lot of sports genre films. My short film also has the relationship between two characters which is in most sports movies the sports person usually has a supportive character that helps them and support them through difficult training. In my short film this is the relationship between Bobby Pool (Tom) and Mick Lovato (Mitchell)

Editing
I edited my short film on 'Adobe Premiere Pro' and found it quite simple when i got the hang of it. To edit raw footage I used the cut tool, this meant I could make sure my scenes were only what I needed. When I need to raise the volume of the dialogue I used audio gain, that meant I could get the audio to a perfect volume, and I deleted any unwanted background noise. I also added my background music by converting it to a MP3 and importing it and putting it over the montage scenes
